Kinja'd!!!2 Kinja'd!!! 70

Any Oppos carry/use a knife everyday? I started with a Camillus “Blaze” which is kind of a chode knife (too short and too thick). Moved to a Ken Onion “Ripple”. Which was nice to hold but bad to operate, and the clip sucked. Then I bought a Kershaw “Leek” which I have carried for the last year or so. It has been great, but it’s weathered and dull.

Kinja'd!!!

I’m sending it in to be sharpened because Kershaw does it for free, and I have spent hours looking into the best sharpening techniques and equipment. I know myself well, what will happen there is I will spend $100+ on sharpening stuff and be unsatisfied with the result and or end up duller than I started.

Sooooo I’m thinking of treating myself to a new knife so that I have something while the Kershaw is in transit. I’m leaning toward a Spyderco of some variety because I have heard that they are good from several sources including the internet.

Any suggestions? I use a knife for opening boxes/packaging, prying off wall plates/cutting around them, and other small daily tasks. The grip of whatever knife I buy has to be sturdy because another major use is opening beers via the finger/leverage technique.

I don’t carry it with me, but my knife of choice for breaking down all the cardboard boxes from all the online shopping my wife and I do is this Coast RX352 that I got for 15 bucks at Home Depot .

I keep it at home. I’d feel like a douche leaving the house with it. I haven’t attempted to open a beer with it. I have a bottle opener for that. Which I also don’t leave the house with.

Spyderco Endura and Delica are perfect daily carries for me. You can get pretty much every blade grind, a number of different handle types, and different steels. If you just want to see if you like their designs and handling there’s a line they call ‘Byrd’ knives which are very similar to the main ‘Spyderco’ line but are manufactured in China with lesser materials (though still totally adequate) for significantly cheaper. I believe the Medowlark is the Delica analog and the Cara Cara the Endura.

I work in an office environment, so don’t have much need for a larger daily carry. I get by with a Leatherman Micra in my bag and a Nite Ize DoohicKey in my pocket. If you are having issues sharpening your knives and keeping them sharp, you might consider selecting a knife with a carbon steel blade instead of a stainless steel blade. The carbon steel is harder, is easier to sharpen, and can hold an edge longer, but it may also be brittle and prone to rusting. Stainless is softer, harder to sharpen, and doesn’t hold an edge as well, but is rustproof and will bend instead of breaking.

My wife’s favorite knife has a carbon steel blade. It is super easy to sharpen, but it will start rusting if not immediately dried after cleaning. I’ve had to recondition it several times, usually because one of the kids didn’t dry it when cleaning up after dinner.

I have a sage 5 that I carry every day.

Kinja'd!!!

http://www.bladehq.com/item—Spyderco-Sage-5-Compression-Lock—36444

I love this knife. I used to carry a tenacious every day but wanted something with a much better steel and lock. I love the compression lock and This thing is a cutting machine. S30V is also easy to touch up on a whetstone. Wire clip too which is more discreet and easier on nicer clothes. The scales are g10 however so its not THAT easy on clothes.

The Spyderco PM2 is also a good choice at the same price range and it has better ergonomics, but it is bigger and “stabbier” looking to the uninitiated. With the PM2 you also get some different steel options BladeHQ has S35VN in stock which s meant to be a nice upgrade over s30v. They also have S110V in stock but thats probably overkill for your needs.

Kinja'd!!!

If you like the PM2 but want something a little smaller then you should get a Para3. S110V is coming out soon for this knife.

I’m a huge spyderco fan, especially for their offbeat models. I’m carrying a Lava in my pocket right now. They’re especially good at making small blades as useful as larger blades.

If you’re interested in a unique and people friendly knife, the Cricket is a great little cutter. Stainless steel handles make it super slim, and I have actually used mine to open beer bottles.

As for resharpening, I’ve heard the Spyderco Sharpmaker is great for people who don’t trust themselves freehand sharpening.

Works amazing. Is it as good as a factory job? No. But it’s fast and easy to get a pretty deadly edge going.

Or if you don’t want to drop the money on it, cheap as it is... an old router bit will do the exact same job, it’s just a lot more awkward to hold.

This cheap Gerber has been my daily carry knife for the last 3 or 4 years. It is the first and last thing in and out of my pocket every day, and I use it for all kinds of stuff. It is a Chinese steel (but decent quality Chinese steel) blade. It never seems to get super, super sharp, but it has proven pretty durable in holding the edge it does take. Probably more importantly is that the body has proven really durable, which is important because I’ve had several previous daily carry knives that were better blades, but whose body and mechanisms didn’t stand up to actually being carried everyday.

For daily carry, I gravitate towards smaller, cheaper folders with a serrated section like these. They fit well in my pocket, are discrete, and are cheap enough to not care about anything happening to them. Someday I’d like to get a nice, custom Benchmade folder to carry, but every time I play with the configurator I end up looking at the Gerber in my pocket and deciding not to spend the $200.

As a little aside, it turns out that looking for the tell-tale clip on a front pocket is the quickest way to identify fellow veterans in academia. Otherwise, most other folks in an academic research library go looking for scissors in their desks or awkwardly try and use a pen or their keys to open stuff.

My two most carried knives are a Spyderco Paramilitary 2, and a Spyderco Manix 2 Lightweight. Both excellent knives, and the Paramilitary 2 is like the gold standard of EDC knives.

If you want something cheaper to bang on that is cheap to replace, Kershaw makes a lot of nice inexpensive knives. My third most carried knife is a Kershaw Thermite. Kershaw does a lot of collabs to bring expensive knife designs (Hinderer, Emerson, etc.) at a low cost by using lower quality materials. Even then, you can get perfectly fine and respectable EDC knives in the $30-$40 category.

Other good options are Ontario Rat series, Benchmade 940 and Griptilian/Mini-Griptilian, Spyderco Delica and Endura.

For budget options here’s a pretty good list: http://www.bladehq.com/cat—Great-Knives-Under-50—2513

First of all, lol@ the image/gif you used to lead off. Umm, so that aside...

I work in an office now, but worked at a marina previously where everyone carried some kind of knife. There, I ended up favoring a bigger, heavier Kershaw for two big reasons: 1) it was heavy enough to use as a hammer from time to time, fixing some bent/sharp piece of metal on all kinds of things and 2) the tip was broken JUST RIGHT so it could be used as a phillips screwdriver pretty reliably. I used that all the time. The handle would scratch but only cosmetically. I beat that knife to death and it held up great. I still have one new in the box I got from ebay as a spare.

When I moved to an office job I started carrying a Kershaw Leek too. I found that the blade was too thin/fragile for just about anything but opening boxes, packages, that kind of straight-down pressure. I often use it for light poking or prying and needed a beefier blade. In fact I “fixed” the office sink the other day when the stopper got stuck down (I pried it up in 2 seconds while others were asking how to put in a work order). So now I have a Kershaw Vapor 1640 kinda like this:

Kinja'd!!!

That picture is the exact knife I carried at the marina. The serrated part was great for cutting ropes, also - which I did all the time back then.

Here’s my current:

Kinja'd!!!

This has the same kind of clip on the other side. I have a silver one and a black one, I’ll usually pick whichever one contrasts the least with my pants for the day. I like that the clip is relatively small, even compared to the Leek - again, less conspicuous in an office environment.

I open bottles with it, although I have to use the back of the blade with the knife closed - the handle is too rounded on the edges to work for that.

The other thing I have a few of is a Leatherman SideClip - it’s almost exactly like the original tool, but with a pocket clip. While it’s bulkier than a pocket knife, it clearly does more. However, for a quick flip to open an envelope or something, it’s cumbersome and kind of comes off (visually, to office people) like a butterfly knife when you flip it open to get to the blade.

How’s that for a long answer? I have a lot of opinions about knives, clearly. I’m happy to discuss further.

Oh yeah and I also sharpen mine regularly with the same tools I use on my kitchen knives - a standard rod-style sharpener and one of these:

I’m seconding the Leatherman suggestion, though I’d go for a Skeletool over a Squirt. I like the that knife can be easily opened one handed, like a pocket knife, and the fewer tools is has are heavier duty. I’m an engineer, and the Skeletool is perfect for the quick cutting/grabbing/screwing tasks I do that don’t justify grabbing a specialized tool. It fits in the pocket pretty well, too.

I like the Barrage, particularly the blade, but it’s a little big for me to EDC. My leek is 7" open and it’s as large as I would want. I work in an office with a bunch of people who are scared of knives lol. I also need something that’s not going to bang up the pockets of my nice pants, which is why I’m considering the Spyderco.

The Barrage would be a great one for the weekends. If I can get a deal on one, I would definitely ring one up.

That is the same method I use to sharpen mine. I’ve got a couple of friends who are savants when it comes to sharpening blades, so I occasionally give them one of my knives to do up. Otherwise, I just run my cheap, daily carry Gerber through a little sharpener like that once a month or so.

Zootility Tools WildCard for me. My pocket knife / utility tool needs are fairly minimal, so the form factor (roughly the size of two stacked credit cards) made it very appealing. It’s been holding up well for me after about a year and a half of periodic use. Just gotta remember to take it out of my wallet before flying.

I’ve always wondered how a wallet/credit card tool would work for me. Probably not well as an every day thing. These days as I only carry my phone, keys, and knife. My wallet stays in the car unless I’m traveling or going out to eat at a place where I can’t pay with my phone.

Still worth having in my wallet for emergencies, how much did that set you back?

Yeah, the wall plate stuff you described would probably be a bit much for it, but it works well for boxes and other light-duty cutting (and isn’t as awkward to hold as you’d think). Retails for about $35 in most places.

I’ve pretty much reached the same conclusion on size

If you’re considering a Mini Grip, look for the recently discontinued HK Mini Axis. It’s a D2, G10 Mini Grip for $20+ less than a Mini Grip. It was the last “modern” knife I bought. I’m a “traditional” guy, though.

carry a knife here and you’ll ‘win’ a ride in a police car.

I think it’s just practice... I’ve been periodically sharpening my kitchen knives now for about 10 years, and I’m much better at it now than I was previously. I used to sharpen skis by hand in high school and college, same kind of thing I think. You get a feel for it and can do a better job, faster than someone with less experience.

I wonder if your friends use a whet stone... ever tried it? Very rarely for me, my father has one though and it’s great when used correctly.

Sometimes I bust out my cordless dremel for rough work on a very dull blade... it’s good but not very precise.

Yes, my savant sharpening friends use stones. I’ve never tried it myself on the knowledge that I probably know just enough to know that I don’t know enough to do it well. I’m sure it would just take practice to get good at it.
